The Benton MacKaye Trail is one of the lesser-known but most beloved long-distance trails in the U.S., and it begins right here in North Georgia. Named after the visionary who first proposed the Appalachian Trail, this 300-mile trail crosses rivers, ridges, and remote forests—with several accessible segments near Blue Ridge.
Just outside Ellijay, Amicalola Falls State Park is home to a jaw-dropping 729-foot waterfall—making it the tallest in Georgia. The hike to the top of the falls involves a steep staircase climb, but you're rewarded with panoramic mountain views and the sound of cascading water.
Located just a short drive from downtown Blue Ridge, Fall Branch Falls is a fantastic family-friendly waterfall hike. The trail is just under a mile round trip and leads to a picturesque double waterfall—perfect for a quick nature fix or a peaceful picnic spot.
A true hidden gem, the Toccoa Swinging Bridge is the longest swinging bridge east of the Mississippi at 270 feet. This short hike takes you to a suspension bridge that crosses the Toccoa River—offering amazing photo ops and a unique experience for kids and adults alike.
